Since books might be published throughout the day, and in different time zones, I'm going to overlap my new book posts a little bit.  I'm posting slightly before the end date of my previous update, and for example while I'm listing a few books that will be released tomorrow (May 25), I suspect by the end of the day other books will be released.  I'll pick those up the in the next set of books that I post.

Agency vs Non Agency 1/1/2011 to 5/24/2011

I've gone back and tried to categorize publishers as agency or non-agency based on their price status. I've generated statistics for those similiar to my last set. (with non fiction and technical as well).

Below is my new set of statistics. It is interesting that Non Agency books dominate Amazon in raw numbers, they are cheaper and there are far more of them. However I suspect if you were to account for sales, the domination would be the other direction, there are of course outliers (Amanda Hocking for example).  The exception would probably be romance, since I don't think Harlequin  is an agency publisher.

Agency vs non agency

A recent change to my reports is that I can now detect an agency book vs a non agency book. Over the last year the big print publishers in the US have adopted an agency model where they set the price and retailers receive a specific cut (30%). Other books set a list price and the retailers can set their own price from there.

Because the biggest 6 publishers are all using this you can see some higher prices from agency publishers, which has angered many ebook readers. At the same time the agency publishers publish a high percentage of the books people are interested in.

I'm going to institute two changes in my future listings:
  1. Agency books and books I find particularly interesting will be published in one table. The other books will be published in a second table.
  2. I will report the publisher price statistics for agency vs non agency books.

In addition to play catch up, I'm going to publish a listing of all the Agency books (and books I found interesting myself) as seperate posts.  Hopefully those will be useful to people who don't want to read through hundreds of books to catch up with what has been published this year.  Future posts will be less smaller.

The method I use to determine an agency book vs a non agency book is when Amazon prints that the price was set by the publisher. I will consider a publisher an agency publisher if it has at least one agency book in the time period being reported on.

I think that these changes will make it easier to find very popular books in the agency listing, however I also encourage people to check the non agency listing. This is an exciting time and a lot of people are publishing outside the big 6 publishers. Indeed far more is being published by other people, which is great from a diversity point of view, but it also decreases the signal to noise ratio.
